When I started this blog, at least part of the goal was to start releasing some of my own work. Its not that I haven’t been working in the studio, its just that I cannot seem to stay focused on one sound or idea for long enough to create a finished track.
I think I’ll start posting the occasional “sketch” to help me stay on target.
So without further ado, here is an early sketch for a track called “DARP and Next” recorded in November.
“Philosophy of Time Travel” was another early and favorite netlabel experience for me (from the same Camomille“Featherfoil” comp as the previous review). Ultimately it led me to Alex’s Milieu blog, which was quite an inspiration to me a few years ago (alas, he is not doing much with it anymore).
“Can’t Translate” was one of my first experiences with the netlabel world a few years ago. At the time, it was right up my alley, and for the most part it has aged well for me.
Update: Ponder this quote from the Sounds from the Post Office page: “The entire record including the vocals was done is DOS impulse tracker on a 133mhz pentium computer.”
A fantastic track from Herzog. I like it more each time I listen. As with my previous review, “to birds..” is also from the Camomille “demeter weeps” compilation.
The track title says it all. A most enjoyable ambient excursion by Transient. Look for his other work all over the Netlabel scene as Transient, Tran5ient and Absorbed in the Spring. I’m really into his visual work as well, which can be seen at deviantART.
Anyhow, “bedroom ambient 02″ was released on the Camomille “demeter weeps” compilation.
Anyhow, since I link directly to some album art, and most mp3s directly on the archive.org servers, the blog looks sort of broken at the moment. I’d like to continue hotlinking to archive.org servers so the artists will get “credit” (in the form of download counts). But if the problems continue, perhaps I’ll switch to hosting all files locally.
I am not embedding this week’s track “Alaska” by Goto80 because it is not clear to me that it is released under the Creative Commons (so it might not be legal). However, it is a free download, so go grab it.
Anyhow, “Alaska” has been one of Owen’s favorite tracks for over a year now (it was originally released in 2004). I’ve heard it coming from his stereo literally thousands of times. If you like pure 8-bit sound made on real 8-bit platforms, you’ll love the entire Copyslave release on 20kpbs. You’ll also love the dozens of other Goto80 releases.
With flowing minimalist loops, clicks, and cuts, “Walter Schmidt” uses elements that would likely sound tired if used by lesser producers. However, AAM brings real heart to this track. “Co. Op EP” released in 2005 on Filtro.
“M1″ is the ambient first movement of the three-part “Chaosmos EP” released on Test Tube. According to the release notes on archive.org “We ask that you do a complete listen of this EP”, so go download the whole thing already!
