Archive for the “CC Netlabel Playlist” Category

A playlist of my favorite CC licensed netlabel releases from the past few years.

A fantastic track from Herzog. I like it more each time I listen.  As with my previous review, “to birds..” is also from the Camomille “demeter weeps” compilation.

The track title says it all. A most enjoyable ambient excursion by Transient. Look for his other work all over the Netlabel scene as Transient, Tran5ient and Absorbed in the Spring.   I’m really into his visual work as well, which can be seen at deviantART.

Anyhow, “bedroom ambient 02″ was released on the Camomille “demeter weeps” compilation.

It looks like they are having some trouble at archive.org this weekend. Perhaps it has something to do with the holidays and server upgrades at archive.org.

Anyhow, since I link directly to some album art, and most mp3s directly on the archive.org servers, the blog looks sort of broken at the moment. I’d like to continue hotlinking to archive.org servers so the artists will get “credit” (in the form of download counts). But if the problems continue, perhaps I’ll switch to hosting all files locally.

“Alaska” by Goto80 -- Cover ArtI am not embedding this week’s track “Alaska” by Goto80 because it is not clear to me that it is released under the Creative Commons (so it might not be legal). However, it is a free download, so go grab it.

Anyhow, “Alaska” has been one of Owen’s favorite tracks for over a year now (it was originally released in 2004). I’ve heard it coming from his stereo literally thousands of times. If you like pure 8-bit sound made on real 8-bit platforms, you’ll love the entire Copyslave release on 20kpbs. You’ll also love the dozens of other Goto80 releases.

Complete release at 20kbps.sofapause.ch.

Update: So it wasn’t released under the Creative Commons, but rather into the public domain (and is available on archive.org). So without further ado:

“Walter Schmidt” by Antiguo Autómata Mexicano -- Cover Art

With flowing minimalist loops, clicks, and cuts, “Walter Schmidt” uses elements that would likely sound tired if used by lesser producers. However, AAM brings real heart to this track. “Co. Op EP” released in 2005 on Filtro.

“The Coffee Brings You Back” by Kultobjekt

A long and hypnotic track with microhouse(ish) elements that drift in an out, “The Coffee Brings You Back” by Kultobjekt is all about the details for me - in particular the heavily reverbed metallic sound that appears every two bars as part of the drums… I listen to this track on repeat quite often while I’m coding. “Bitte 1Bit!” released on 1Bit Wonder.

“Essines’ Hair” by Beak

Beak has released some fine music over the past few years. “Essines’ Hair” is representative, with a catchy combination of guitar and acoustic instruments mixed with frantic beats and samples. From “Bishop Whitney EP [mtk180]“, released on Monotonik.

Cover Art

All optimism and retro-futuristic (yet contemporary?!) sounds, this track is guaranteed to make you smile.  Its another release originally spotted by Owen.  From “Spaceman Far Away From Home [mtk169]“, released on Monotonik.
